About Us

A place to live, work and study

Bury’s ambition is to be one of the best boroughs in Britain in which to live, work and study.

Our vision is for a borough characterised by strong local communities, a thriving local economy with mixtures of sector leading businesses and a retail offer, all complemented by outstanding local schools and further education offer.

The ultimate mix of both town and countryside, Bury is wrapped around the valley of the River Irwell and nestles under the Pennine hills.

With excellent transport links and a fast and frequent Metrolink service from Bury to Manchester city centre and beyond, it’s a great place to base yourself and to reach the rest of Greater Manchester, the North West and Yorkshire.

Discover the range of high street fashion brands, independent retailers and fantastic entertainment available at this premier shopping and leisure destination - Bury is ranked as the third best retail destination in Greater Manchester.

The borough’s outlying towns (Prestwich, Radcliffe, Ramsbottom, Tottington and Whitefield) also all have their own unique offer.

At Bury’s famous and award-winning market you can find our black puddings can be found - one of the country’s finest delicacies!

Bury Market dates back to the 1440s and attracts millions of visitors every year. It has 370 stalls and was voted Britain’s Favourite Market in 2019.

There’s also a whole host of opportunities to relax and unwind in miles of stunning open countryside with breath-taking views, rolling hills and vast moorlands - all within easy reach.

Holcombe Tower at the top of Holcombe Hill provides spectacular views, while Burrs Country Park provides reminders of the industrial past in the green valley of the River Irwell.

For a nostalgic trip through the borough the East Lancashire Heritage Railway offers a 12 mile steam train trip from the town centre to Rawtenstall to the north and Heywood to the east.

A borough of opportunity

  • a new hotel, town centre housing, and the renewal of the Mill Gate shopping centre with employment, hospitality, health and education uses
